Visible Lines 2015-Present
Visible Lines is a series of drawings exploring aging, self-perception, memory, and the body.
Visible Lines began as a series of drawings: self-portraits and portraits of aging women. The drawings, most larger than life, were my response to ageism. They were a cultural remedy to my increasing sense of imposed invisibility as a woman over 50. The drawings led me to examine how menopause, and thus menopausal women, are represented in our culture. Menopause is typically not seen as a natural progression of aging but rather as a state of decay taking place on a cellular level that must be reversed, or at the very least decelerated.
In the scientific community menopause seemed to be an area of exploration, a frontier to be examined and conquered. Discovering cellular images of menopausal reproductive organs provided new imagery to work with. These cellular images were unexplored landscapes and seascapes. They became backdrops for new drawings based on extreme adventure magazines and aging became an adventure in uncharted terrains.
