Stretching It: Surviving on AFDC, 1994
In 1993 I received an Artist in the Community Grant from the City of Los Angeles, Cultural Affairs Department to produce a project documenting the lives of single mothers surviving on AFDC. The project consisted of an exhibition and a booklet which would serve as a resource guide for single mothers as well as an exhibition catalog.
Dirty Laundry, 1995
Dirty Laundry: A plein air installation of “Stretching It: Surviving on AFDC” at Cal State, Los Angeles during the “Veracity” Exhibition. The Veracity Exhibition was an exhibition about documentary projects in and about Los Angeles. When “Stretching It” was not included in the exhibition, I installed a clothesline outside the gallery and hung the “Stretching It” booklets on the clothesline. The cover of each book was stamped:
“REJECTED - WHY IS WOMEN’S WORK IN ART AND SOCIETY STILL SWEPT UNDER THE RUG?”
The clothesline remained in place for the duration of the Veracity Exhibition and became a distribution point for the booklet which had to be continuously restocked.
